Gorilla Trekking

Anywhere from one to eight hours of walking, depending entirely on where the gorilla family has moved to that day. Steep, often muddy terrain at around 1,500 to 2,500 metres, frequently with no established path. Nobody can tell you in advance which kind of day you will get.

Worth knowing before you book

• •Minimum age 15, set by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and strictly enforced.
• •Not suitable if you have significant knee, hip or back problems, or a heart or respiratory condition, without speaking to your doctor first.
• •You will be turned away if you are visibly unwell on the day. This protects the gorillas, who catch human illnesses.
• •Altitude affects some people even at this height.

What helps

• Porters are available and worth taking. They carry your bag, help on steep sections, and the fee goes directly to the local community.
• Walking boots with ankle support and grip, already worn in.
• Waterproof layer. It rains in a rainforest, often without warning.
• Some hill walking beforehand makes a real difference.
